Pubmed RSS Broken

I was planning to do a screencast on how to use the Pubmed RSS and auto-email features but I was shocked to discover that the RSS feeds generated didn’t work. When I entered the RSS feed into Google Reader or Bloglines, all I got was “NCBI: RSS Feed not found.”

I emailed the NCBI helpdesk and received the following reply:

Dear Dr. Agbayani:

PubMed is having technical difficulties with RSS feeds. We hope to
have this resolved as soon as possible. Please try again later.
Thank you for your patience and understanding.

There we have it: confirmation that Pubmed RSS is broken. Hope they fix it soon.

This is a huge problem. I wish they will fix it quickly. Thanks for posting this information. The person I got an answer from at the NCBI helpdesk was not aware of the error.

I have found an almost perfect workaround. Under the tab “Limits” / Subsets you tick both PMC and Medline (at the end of the subset list) and do your search again. Then select Send to RSS and the “NCBI: RSS Feed not found.” problem is solved.

A sample search of mine yields 126 hits with the subset limit. Without there are 128. The teo missing are very resent articles.

On April 17th 2008 I recieved the following from custserv@nlm.nih.gov:

“I apologize for the difficulties you experienced searching with PubMed and RSS Feeds. PubMed did have a temporary problem, but it has now been resolved. Please reload or refresh your browser and try PubMed again. Thank you for your patience and understanding.”

And I can confirm that everythin is now back to normal.
